Name Change - Maintenance & Improvements

During the past 50 years the Caveside Pool has undergone major upgrades and refurbishment as consecutive committees endeavoured to maintain and constantly improve facilities.  The Committee itself has also had several  incarnations, from the original 1957 Caveside Swimming Pool Committee which was instrumental in the planning and construction of the pool, to the Caveside Progress Association in 1967, and finally in 1983, a name change to Caveside Recreation Committee - a Special Committee of Meander Valley Council.

In 1960 an archway, donated by the C.W.A  was erected over the gate to the swimming pool area and a new collection box posted at the entrance. The archway still stands today although not in its original position.

In the late 1960’s  a filtration plant was installed which was essential if the laborious weekly task of emptying and manually  scrubbing and cleaning  the pool was to be eliminated. In the early 1970’s a new brick toilet block was built.  Both these projects were made possible with financial assistance from the State Government but as with the building of the pool, the workforce was entirely of local citizens giving freely of their time.

In 1973, with the toilet block complete, a weldmesh fence with roll top was constructed around the pool while a large cement walkway was laid along the side of the pool.

By 1977 the Swimming Pool Committee was committed to building a new tennis court, again with financial assistance from the Govt., on land donated by Mr. Athol Norris.

In  1983 the Committee was investigating the purchase of the Caveside Methodist Hall and by 1986 the transaction and sale was complete.  The Caveside Recreation Committee was now responsible for the Swimming Pool, Tennis Court and Hall.

During 1992 the Committee first discussed  extensive and much needed refurbishment to the Hall, including a new kitchen, new toilets and an upgrade of the ante room. Once again, a Govt Grant was received, but extensive fundraising was also conducted by the Committee and the local people.  During 1996/97  the building renovations to the Hall were completed and on 10th May  a celebration was held during which Mrs. Ena Harvey officially opened the new renovations.  In 1998 new heaters were installed in the Hall.

There was no time for the Committee to rest on its laurels.  In November 2000 reconstruction of a new pump shed at the pool commenced and on Saturday 10th February at the 2001 Pool Party, Michael Polley MHA officially opened the latest refurbishments which included the new pump shed and upgraded filter system,  security fence around the pool, and toddler-proof fence fitted between the shallow and deep end of the pool.   Later in the same year, two new Gas BBQ units were purchased and installed.

In 2002 shade cloth was erected at the toddler’s end of the pool and in 2006 a new boundary roadside fence was erected with materials supplied by Meander Valley Council, and once again the labour force coming from Caveside Recreation Committee members.
